The pool is open 30 minutes after the opening of the facility and closes 30 minutes before the facility or 9:30pm.
Student Employment Opportunities
Working at the Fitness and Recreation Center is designated for students at UMF who have interests in any of the below areas. Student workers in the facility have energetic personalities, are self- motivating, take their work seriously as professionals and enjoy the environment of the Fitness Center. Students are not required to have work study, but some positions below prefer that students do.

Front
Desk Staff
Responsibilities include opening
facility, answering the phone, processing transactions, directing visitors,
providing customer service and small projects as assigned. Shifts range from
2-4 hours during facility hours.
Cradles
and Crayons Staff
Responsible for supervising our drop-in
childcare program for non-school aged children Monday – Friday, 9-10am. Staff
set up equipment, play games, read stories, and provide general supervision.
After School Program
Staff
Supervise and participate in games, activities,
and arts and crafts for children ages 6-12 at the Fitness and Recreation
Center. The program operates M-F 3-5pm with staff hours being 2:30-5:30 (times
may be adjusted to accommodate school schedules).
Intramural Staff
A 4-5 person staff to coordinate and run intramural activities which
include 6 sports, weekend tourneys, and a year ending event. Responsibilities
include registration, refereeing, running game clocks and scoreboards, and
set-up and break-down of the event. The fall season runs 9/18-12/10 and the
spring season 1/16-4/6. Games are held Sunday, M, W, and Th. with outdoor games
running 4:30-8pm and indoor games running 7:45-11pm.
Program Supervisors
Responsibilities include supervising member activity well utilizing the
facility, basic cleaning of equipment, and equipment inventory. As a constant
ambassador of the facility, members will look to you for advice, assistance, and
other information. Through regular walking rounds of the facility, you are the
eyes and ears for promoting a safe within the facility. It is strongly suggested
that Program Supervisors have taken the Strength and Conditioning PHE lab or
have equivalent knowledge. Shifts run open to close, in coordination with
facility hours.
Lifeguards
To be hired as a lifeguard, you must hold a
current American Red Cross Lifeguard certificate. The pool is a one guard
facility, requiring you to have strong communication and rescuer skills. General
job related tasks included, patron surveillance, injury prevention, and
cleaning/maintains on pool area.
Water Safety
Instructors
To be hired as a Water Safety Instructor, you
must hold a current American Red Cross WSI certification and be in good
standings with your home chapter. Swim lessons run Monday/Wednesday and
Tuesday/Thursday from 4:30pm- 5:30pm. The Infant and Preschool program runs
Sunday’s starting at 3pm. Within a time block, lessons are broken up by levels.
Working with the Director of Aquatics you will be assigned groups of students.
Group Fitness
Instructors
To be hired as a group fitness instructor you must hold a current certification
from a nationally recognized certifying organization (examples: ACE or AFAA) or
you must have completed the instructor training course offered through the UMF
FRC. Group fitness classes include a variety of cardiovascular workouts, aquatic
workouts, and group strength training. Additional training can prepare you to
teach specialized classes such as Pilates or Yoga. You will be responsible for
teaching safe, effective and enjoyable exercise, and setting up and putting away
any equipment used in the class. You are a motivator as well as an instructor in
group fitness. You may have the opportunity to teach a cardio or aquatic section
of PHE 010.
Personal Trainers
To be hired as a personal trainer you must hold
a current certification from a nationally recognized certifying organization
(examples: ACE, ACSM, AFAA, others) or you must have completed the personal
trainer preparation course offered through the UMF FRC. Personal trainers assist
members of the FRC with fitness assessments, goal setting, and individualized
exercise program planning to achieve those goals. A trainer should have good
communication and organizational skills as well as sound fitness knowledge.
Personal trainers’ work hours are flexible based on client appointments. As a
trainer you may have the opportunity to teach a PHE 010 Strength and
Conditioning section.
PHE 010 Instructors:
Games
To teach this class you need experience in a variety of sports and
games, especially games that can be played indoors. You will need to be a
leader, a motivator, an organizer, and a creative instructor. The goal of the
course is to improve fitness through games. Having taken the class yourself will
enhance your understanding of what it required. Prior work in recreation is
helpful but not required.
